Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Capital Campaign
Beautiful Today, More Beautiful Tomorrow!
Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful (KNIB), then known as Winnebago/Rockford Clean and Beautiful,
was formed as an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful in 1988. One of the first programs the agency coordinated was Recycle Rockton. When Rockton began offering curbside recycling to its residents, KNIB worked with a volunteer committee and Waste Management to open the Roscoe Recycling Center in 1990. In 2010, the Strategic Planning Committee agreed that KNIB needed a facility of its own to service Winnebago and neighboring counties, and to provide greater recognition than the current administrative office provided. A Building Committee was formed and spent over 3 years looking for the best location to accomplish the goals. The former Continental Body Shop building, located at 4665 Hydraulic Road in Rockford was chosen as the perfect location. The Rockford Recycling Center opened in 2013, with the Administrative office remaining in Loves Park.
Currently, the Rockford and Roscoe Recycling Centers are the only local recycle facilities staffed solely by volunteers. In addition to the recycling centers, environmental programs offered by KNIB are: Recycle to Go, Christmas Tree Recycling and Free Mulch Distribution, Earth Day Awards Luncheon, Clothing Drive, Metals Drive, Medications Drive, Education Programs, Crayon Recycling, Great America Cleanup with Keep America Beautiful, Shred-it Day, Flag Collection and Cell Phones for Soldiers. There are plans to expand programs once the building on Hydraulic Road is renovated to include administrative offices and an education center and library. The KNIB Capital Campaign, “Beautiful Today, More Beautiful Tomorrow, is poised to raise the $890,113 necessary to make the dream a reality.
