LARGE APPLIANCES ARE BANNED FROM ILLINOIS LANDFILLS
Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain Freon, a substance which can contaminate the groundwater and is poisonous to humans and pets. It is illegal and dangerous to expel Freon from appliances onto the ground. Some businesses are licensed to properly dispose of major appliances by removing hazardous substances and recycling parts or by collecting appliances for a recycler.
Items such as ranges, washers, and dryers do not contain contaminants and may be safely disposed of as scrap metal. Some garbage haulers offer bulk item pick-up or drop-off services, which may incur a fee. Call your service provider for details. When purchasing a new appliance, ask the retailer if they will safely dispose the old appliance when they deliver the new one.
Small appliances such as a toaster, microwave, can opener, mixer, etc., may be reused or recycled:
