Large Appliances, Banned from Illinois Landfills

When purchasing a new appliance, ask the retailer if they will safely dispose the old appliance when they deliver the new one.

Items such as ranges, washers, and dryers may be safely disposed of as scrap metal. Some garbage haulers or communities offer bulk item pick-up or drop-off services, which may incur a fee. Call your service provider for details.

FREON Appliances

Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain Freon, a toxic substance which can contaminate the groundwater and is poisonous to humans and pets. It is illegal and dangerous to expel Freon from appliances onto the ground. Licensing is required to remove hazardous substances. Fees may be charged.

*2016:  Freon Appliances accepted at Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful Rockford Recycle Center only; $20 cash per item.
