LARGE APPLIANCES ARE BANNED FROM ILLINOIS LANDFILLS
Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers may contain Freon, a substance which can contaminate the groundwater and is poisonous to humans and pets. It is illegal and dangerous to expel Freon from appliances onto the ground. Some businesses are licensed to properly dispose of major appliances by removing hazardous substances and recycling parts or by collecting appliances for a recycler.
Items such as ranges, washers and dryers do not contain contaminants and may be safely disposed of as indicated below. Some garbage haulers offer pick-up or drop-off service, for a fee after an item has been certified safe for disposal. Call first. When purchasing a new appliance, ask the retailer if they will safely dispose of the old appliance when they deliver the new one.
SMALL APPLIANCES:
