Packing peanuts are generally made of Styrofoam or other plastics which are not recyclable in the Northern Illinois Area.  U-Haul markets a type of packing peanut which is water-soluble.  Place them in a container and cover with water and they will melt.

For ReUse:

Many retail-mailing stores such as FedEx, UPS and Mailboxes, etc. accept packing peanuts for reuse.  Call first.

For Disposal:

If recycling is not an option, place packing peanuts in a closed and sealed bag and place in the garbage. 

Do not take packing peanuts to the Household Hazardous Waste Site.
